The beauty of the Biesbosch

Tuijtel's 'backyard'

Tuijtel works with CO² compensation partner natureOffice® ®on climate protection projects in Togo and in its own country. As a Dutch project, we consciously choose to make a fundamental contribution in our own region; the Biesbosch in Tuijtel’s ‘backyard’.

Ash dieback project

The contributions from Tuijtel’s clients with their carbon offsets went entirely to replanting new trees in the Hollandse Biesbosch in 2019 and 2020. Due to large-scale ash dieback, the forest was completely closed off, thousands of trees were felled and non-viable trees were cleared. Immediately after the felling operations, a start was made on planting various native tree and shrub species. In the meantime, the mega-valuable and intensive project ‘Essentaksterfte’ has been completed and the next interesting project is about to begin….

Brand new poplar project

The focus is now on removing the 40-year-old poplars and planting a future-proof mixture of other tree species so that the function of this woodland area can be guaranteed in the future.

Adjacent to the Merwelanden swimming pool is a strip of woodland with a recreational and nature purpose. Heavy branches and even whole poplars were blown over recently. This can of course cause unsafe situations. Research has shown that really necessary work is needed: trees that pose an immediate danger and have to be cut down (orange dot) and trees that require attention in the years to come (white dot). Some of the trees, deeper in the forest that do not pose an immediate danger, remain.

The 40-year-old high-risk poplars, which are mainly located at the edges, will leave behind a large, empty, ‘sad’ piece after the felling. Now comes the good news: we will use the compensation/contributions from Tuijtel itself and from our clients to replace the uprooted poplars with a future-proof mixture by the end of 2021. The function of this beautiful woodland will therefore remain unchanged in the future. In this way we are preserving another piece of nature for our next generation!
